What am I missing about abstract art?
I am often turned off by it because I don’t see it taking any real skill and I usually don’t buy into the explaination of it or the hidden meaning behind it or the inspiration for it. I often feel that it’s the artist who can come up with the best story to explain it that makes the most money or gets the most attention.
Am I wrong? If so, What makes a great abstract painting?

First of all, all art is an abstraction. Realistically rendered art .even photo-realism is an abstraction of what it sets out to represent. In other words it is something other than the real thing. No matter how much a portrait looks like someone it is still an interpretation of that person or landscape, or what have you. With all that said the term better used is “non-representational ” What I like best about the works that fall into that category is that they are freed up to express a wider range of topics. Pollock used his style/method of painting to relay a sense of movement in his activity of painting, so they’re often referred to as “action paintings”. Although to some his work might appear to be a random acts of splattering paint onto a canvas. Far from it. Over time he developed techniques of applying the paint to achieve desired effects. His paintings were though out,and planned yet allowed for spontaneity As much as he liked to deny it Pollock was an academically trained painter having studied under Thomas Hart Benton and appears as the blond haired harmonica player in the foreground of Benton’s painting,The Ballard of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley”. for which he sat for while a student.

Abstract Art is to me neaither African, European, Asian etc but i have found in many books the alot of researchers say it started in America around the second world war by a Russian artist, but in the east a guy nammed Kasimir Malevich painted stark black on white geometric symbols to fuel his Suprematist movement. Truthfully I believe it was not created by on county/ race of people.

are you talking about art that looks less real than a photograph or do you mean art that is not a picture of anything?
once people were able to take photographs to record reality, there was no need for artists to focus on the technique of realistic representation. when photographs were only in black and white, artists were experimenting with color and focusing less on realistic line and shape. van gogh and monet for example
since then, some artists moved away from representing or copying things in the world to experimenting with the elements and principles of art. there are lots of things in nature that are like abstract art, think about how beautiful clouds can be, even when they don’t look like something else. or a pattern of bare tree branches, a pile of pebbles, ripples on a sand dune.
just like music can be beautiful without lyrics, art can be beautiful without subject matter

Of the three divisions of abstract art, the only one I really like is cubism. The best example of that style is Picasso:

The other 2 forms, neoplasticism and abstract expressionism are more like what Bull describes as melamine kitchen.
I appreciate a wide variety of arts, especially bold and bright colours. One of my favourite SA artists is Pierneef, especially his abstracts:

Another one of my favourites is MC Escher:

The only picture in our lounge is a print of Rosina Wachtmeister:
