How important is art school in a career at oil painting? Are self teaching and art association classes enough?
I’m learning to oil paint, and doing very well at it. I think my work is almost good enough to sell already.
I am wondering, to be a very good painter, do you think I need art school? Classes are $600 each, and I am disabled with bipolar disorder, so I do not know if I could handle the commute and having to go to class regularly. I would also have to take many prerequisites before I got to oil painting. Some I do need, like composition and color theory. I think I could talk the professors out of some of the others since I already have a math degree from that same university and am disabled and sorta poor. As an alternative, there is a local arts association that offers courses for $150.
I know I NEVER could have taught myself mathematics/geology. I also know that a lot of artists are self-taught. I was gifted at mathematics (was getting a PhD in geophysics before disability), and art appears to be the same way.
Am I cheating myself by skipping art school? Thank you!

Just go to your local art supply store and check the community board, they should have some private lessons on there.

The Art Institute of Chicago
Rhode Island School of Design
The School of Visual Arts
The Cooper Union
California Institute of the Arts
Parsons School of Design

First Keep working hard!
Second look online for juried exhibitions that you can enter.
Third take slides of your work and send them to many different galleries.
Lastly don’t give up, it isn’t easy.

I went to Art School–Kutztown Univ., and while I learned some great things–the best part about taking art classes is the commiseration and inspiration from your instructors and classmates!
Now, the local one can do just as much as going to Art School–trust me. As long as you learn new skills and have others to inspire you, local will do.
My opinion–but backed with some experience.

Try to concentrate your efforts on a career you liked most.If after some time you found it useless, you can change to career no.2 and so on.
